Andrew Eppler - Personal Biography

Andrew Eppler

Andrew Eppler began practicing yoga together with his father, Ray Eppler, at age 14. Cliff Barber was their first teacher. After three years of practicing at home with his father, Andrew began to travel. He has studied with teachers in India and many places around the world. His teachers include Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Mr. BNS Iyengar, Cliff Barber, David Williams and Danny Paradise.

Andrew first studied with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in 1990, spending three months at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India learning the primary, intermediate and first few postures of advanced A series. In 1992, Andrew went to live with David Williams and practiced daily for several weeks with David while helping to build a house for David and his family. Over the last 18 years, Andrew has continued to visit David in many places around the world to study and to enjoy a friendship forged in yoga, trust and admiration. David's views on yoga have been very influential.

Andrew also returned to Mysore 5 times over the years to study pranayama, philosophy and mudras with Sri BNS Iyengar. The ascetic lifestyle and unconventional views of Cliff Barber, which included living outdoors, going barefoot, practicing outdoors and cooking on a fire, have also influenced Andrew. He has gone 10 times over the last 20 years to live and study with Cliff. And last, but far from least, there is Danny Paradise. Danny convinced Andrew to travel to India for the first time at the age of 18 and opened Andrew's eyes to a new way of living and seeing the world. Andrew has had strong nomadic tendencies ever since: "I think through his guidance, perhaps more than anyone else's, I came to see myself as a citizen of the world."

Andrew has studied and practiced Ashtanga yoga on a daily basis for 25 years. For many years, Andrew has also studied magic and anything that seems to be impossible. He is well known as the Yogi Magician. Andrew currently manages Ashtanga Yoga Studio, which he started in 1999, and continues to teach and study yoga around the world.
